Benson Andrew Idahosa, a charismatic Pentecostal preacher renowned as the father of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, founded the Church of God Mission International and established Benson Idahosa University in Benin City, Nigeria. Born on September 11, 1938, in Benin City, he passed away on March 12, 1998.
In a notable episode, Archbishop Benson Idahosa sent his son in the gospel, Duncan Williams, to the president of Ghana. The Archbishop, seeking a platform for his son to preach, demanded airtime on the National Television. The president responded dismissively, asking, “Who’s Idahosa?” Undeterred, Idahosa declared, “I, Benson Idahosa, I dethrone you.” Surprisingly, the president was replaced by Jerry John Rawlings within a month.
When Idahosa approached the new president, Jerry John Rawlings, requesting television time for Duncan to preach, Rawlings, having heard of his predecessor’s fate, granted the request without hesitation.
During his time, Archbishop Idahosa wielded significant influence beyond the church walls. Governments in African countries, especially Nigeria, respected his authority, and the secular world acknowledged his impact. His forceful presence prevented any disrespect towards churches.
Archbishop Idahosa also gained recognition from American Christian bodies and had associations with Western faith leaders such as T. L Osborne, S. G Elton, Gordon Lindsey, and Morris Cerullo. He laid hands on renowned evangelists like Reinhard Bonnke and mentored healing evangelist Benny Hinn, leaving a lasting legacy.
Witnessing him minister in Asia alongside Benny Hinn, with translation by Dr. David Yongi Cho, founder of the world’s largest church, was awe-inspiring. Today’s African Pentecostalism is deeply influenced by Idahosa’s fatherhood, as many current faith leaders trace their roots directly or indirectly to his impactful legacy.
Rest in peace, Archbishop Benson Idahosa 🕊️
