Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state, stands as the largest city in Nigeria and the third in Africa, following Cairo and Johannesburg. Nestled in the southwest region of Nigeria, the city is renowned for its vibrant cultures, lifestyle, history, and captivating tourist spots.
One of Ibadan’s frequently visited attractions is the University of Ibadan Zoological Garden, a home to a diverse array of animals, from lions to rabbits. It’s a customary practice for many local families to visit the zoo during festive seasons for leisure and enjoyment.
On a fateful (later tragic) day during the Easter season of 1991, visitors flocked to the U.I zoo to experience the tranquil atmosphere of the enclosure and witness various animals they had only seen on screens. Among the animals, a bold and audacious prophet named Daniel Abodurin emerged with an extraordinary plan – to enter the lions’ cage and touch them, reminiscent of the biblical story of Daniel who miraculously survived the lions’ den.
Prophet Daniel Abodurin, determined to showcase the ‘work of God of Daniel,’ approached zoo staff with a plea to gain access to the lions’ cage. Despite initial refusals, his relentless persistence eventually secured him permission. Some accounts suggest he might have even sneaked into the cage. Regardless, once inside, Prophet Abodurin, clothed in a red robe and clutching a large Bible, began reciting verses and speaking in tongues, calling upon the ‘God of Daniel’ to perform wonders.

Initially, the lions retreated to a corner, perhaps startled by the unusual presence. However, unaware that retreat is a natural response for lions, Prophet Abodurin perceived it as a manifestation of his faith. Moving closer to the lions, he continued chanting, but in a sudden turn of events, the lions attacked him. Despite a desperate struggle for survival, Prophet Daniel Abodurin was overpowered and torn into pieces, devoured by the very creatures he sought to emulate.
The horrific incident triggered panic and a stampede among onlookers, leaving an indelible mark on their memories. Prophet Abodurin’s remains were collected and later buried, marking the bitter and tragic end of a man condemned by many for his bizarre act. Some believed the lions were possessed by powerful demons, advocating for their extermination.
